By Karyn Beckner | English Teacher & Teen Mentor
Things have been busy around TawSaeng. The new Thai school year began in May and just before the students went back to school, we doubled our program space. We previously only had one space for teaching. Which meant we had all our students, about 30, ranging from grade 3 all the way through university in one room. This greatly limited our effectiveness in teaching the students specific to their skill levels. Well, we are so excited that by renting another space for TawSaeng, we are now, not only able to break down into separate classes by skill level or topic, but we can and have added new students!
TawSaeng provides students with opportunities to practice and grow in their confidence to speak English. They receive help with homework and assistance for school scholarships, which covers tuition, supplies, uniforms and school lunches. Every student who is part of the TawSaeng program is cared for and mentored. We build relationships with their families and serve their communities through food assistance and encouragement.
Without a program like TawSaeng, students might be swayed into the life of drugs or gang, but we give a safe place for students to come after-school; many of our students have been coming to TawSaeng for over 10 years. TawSaeng is like a second family to them. We are thankful for our new space so that more students can come to TawSaeng.
