Concerns Universe Foundation runs five community centres in Bangalore slums. Our goal is to educate children of low income, illiterate families living without basic amenities. We also provide health education, disease prevention and counselling for all families in the slums. Educational projects include preparing preschool children for school and providing a nutritious meal daily. School children receive academic tutoring to improve school performance. Youth are taught basic computing skills.
Families living in Bangalore slums have a low literacy rate and income level. They live without basic amenities and lack nutritious food so suffer poor health and malnutrition. Preventable diseases are common due to lack of education. Many children either do not go to school regularly or drop out because of poor academic performance. School dropouts roam unattended and some indulge in antisocial activities. The community suffers from many social problems arising from living in poverty.
The project provides childcare in the slums, giving children a good foundation for their education and providing supplemental nutrition and health checks. The centres support families and help to build links with the community, to which we provide health and disease prevention education. We also run tuition centres and summer camps for school children to improve school performance, reduce the dropout rate and inculcate good values and responsibility in students. Computer training engages youth.
Five community centres will care for 200 preschool children every year, preparing them for formal education. 60 school-going children will receive academic help and computer training to engage youth and reduce school dropout and illiteracy rates. In addition, 100 children will benefit from summer camps and 40 dropouts returned to school. The team will make about 300 family visits per month to the slums to educate and counsel in health and nutrition and also to strive to reduce social problems.
