Project Report | Sep 4, 2019
Improving education programs for rural children.

By Juan Manuel Correa Cuellar | President

Dear donors and supporters:

We are happy to announce that Global Giving has awarded in 2019 to FUNDACIÓN COMUNITARIA DON DIEGO the following recognitions:

Top ranked organization, Vetted organization, Site verified organization.

Also our foundation has earned some “Superstar” points for effectiveness and engagement.

Our organization is small and has a long way to go. Thanks to the enthusiastic support of you, our donors, we are advancing helping poor children in a village in México. In the last months we have accomplished the furnishing of an extra classroom and a library. However we know that we need to continue improving our infrastructure and building the team of qualified volunteers and paid teachers to increase the number of children in our education programs.

In the village called Don Diego, our organization is providing after school supplemental education mostly to children that attend a local government primary school, where the quality of education is below world standards, due to poor infrastructure, paucity of materials, excessive number of students per teacher which causes lack of personal attention. Our challenge is to elevate the quality of education and psychological support to most of the 286 children of that school, and providing them the academic and social skills required to be in a level competitive field with more fortunate children attending private schools.

SUMMER PROGRAM.

The poor children of this village, Don Diego, during the summers, traditionally have nothing to do for their good; they do not have the luxury to go on vacation or to a summer camp, and they are idle or working in the fields. For the first time in this village, they were helped by our Foundation with a summer program, that included: crafts, cine club, reading with teachers, classes on health nutrition provided by experts, English classes and sports activities.

Also a group of 45 children were taken to visit a Museum and an art exhibition in town, a trip they could not do by themselves.

Pedro, a parent in the village, said “ I have been working in town ( San Miguel de Allende), for over 30 years, and I never dared to bring my littles one to visit a Museum, now I see how happy the visit made my children, and that they can take profit also of places that I though only rich people could visit, thanks for this opportunity!”

INSCRIPTIONS AND PLANS FOR NEXT SEMESTER.

Fundación Comunitaria Don Diego continues to improve the programs in this community, most of them for the children. For the period starting in September 2019 we have the following classes and workshops: maths, reading, piano lessons, art crafts, painting, ballet, english for kids and teenagers, tutoring for secondary and high school, high school on line. Lectures for vocational guidance, and prevention of premature pregnancy.

We want to ask again for your support in order to continue and grow our work with this poor community. They deserve it!

In the next six months we want to improve safety in the area surrounding the education center, and to open additional classrooms to expand the number of children benefiting from this initiative.
