Support Education for Girls Affected by COVID-19

Last year, schools were closed for 9 months due to the COVID-19  pandemic. Whereas this affected all students, it was particularly difficult for students in exam classes due to the uncertainty of when they were going to sit their exams and whether they would be prepared for the same.

Two of our high school girls are finally sitting for their final exams this April. Even though they're doing so a little later because of the pandemic, we're confident that they will do well. With the support of our generous donors, we were able to provide safe housing, meals, and individualized tutoring for our high school scholars last year. Those in the exam class got help to understand difficult concepts, build confidence and adequately prepare for the exams. Since they went back to school in January, they have been performing exceptionally well.

With schools remaining closed in Kenya due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many girls are still exposed to abuse and reabuse as they spend extended periods of time in close proximity to their known or potential abusers. Many have also been co-opted into unsafe work in order to help cater for their families' needs.

At Freely in Hope, we are breaking the cycle of abuse by ensuring that our scholars are not in the same environment as their abusers. All our scholars are sheltering together in a safe house where they also have access to individualized tutoring, counseling and leadership development. This extra personalized support has seen most of their grades improve tremendously.

We are grateful for the support of our donors whose generosity has allowed our girls to continue pursuing academic excellence in a safe space even during this pandemic. We are confident that the continued pursuit of their dreams will contribute to building a violence free world!
