HCC's Rural Education Scholarship Program (previously Earthquake Orphan Scholarship Program) was established in 2015 following the devastating earthquake that left many children in Nepal orphaned, homeless, and at high risk for trafficking. This program aims to keep children with surviving family members and runs supplemental programs to help strengthen local networks and rebuild rural communities while providing a pathway out of poverty and into leadership for at least 100 children at any time.
The devastating 2015 earthquakes in Nepal killed almost 9,000 people, destroyed homes, buildings, entire villages, and left thousands of children orphaned, according to a Nepali government report. Without intervention, these vulnerable orphans are at risk of being trafficked for labor or sexual exploitation, forced into child marriage, and face a future of poverty and hardship. This project provides support and scholarships for 100 earthquake orphaned children in the worst affected districts.
This project provides orphaned & displaced children with an education and support network within their local communities. The project aims to keep the children with surviving family members, and when this is not possible, enrolled in quality, vetted boarding schools. Each child is guaranteed an education, a safe home, nutritious food, and medical care. The program also provides holistic services, including community building activities, health camps, leadership training and academic counseling.
In the short-term, this project keeps 100 vulnerable orphans in both school and in a caring home, safe from the dangers of being on the streets at a young age. In the long-term, this project provides 100 children with an education and a chance for a stable, self-reliant future free from acute poverty. Through the various support services, the project also encourages the students to give-back, aiming to provide these hard-hit communities with a new generation of community leaders and advocates.
