The homework club initiative was started by All Out Africa in 2015, aiming at helping orphaned and vulnerable children from the ages of 10-15 years who are in primary school level. This is to help improve their Math and English skills and also help them with their daily homework. A spelling bee competition was recently held with these children. This is very important in a child's future as it lays a basic foundation that the child needs through their education and in turn boost their self-esteem. It was a huge success as there were estimated around 50 attendees ranging from teachers to students from different schools. The children were awarded certificates of attendance so they feel motivated to do even better next time. Some of the children in our homework club programme benefit by getting a full set of school uniform which is distributed each year. This is done in order for the children to look like other children at school, With the proper school uniform, they also do better at school as they don't have to abscond themselves from school.
Every year we provide educational trips for children that are part of the 7 NCPS that All Out Africa supports. These children are taken to our local game reserve called Mlilwane Game Park. They get a chance to see animals like the Hippopotumas, Zebras, Crocodiles, and lots more which are incorporated in their Schedules of Works, which is an informal curriculum that was created by All Out Africa as a workbook to help guide our NCP teachers into delivering quality early childhood education to these less privileged children at classroom level. These trips help the children appreciate the environment or country they live in, as most of them do not have the privilege to travel let alone go on a bus. The children also get to be treated to a special nutritious meal on the day. They get all excited as they shout and scream telling the driver of the minibus to add speed. The teacher tries to warn them to lower their voices but with no luck at all as the children are excited not for going on the game park but also for riding the minibus.
As schools closed for the first term, Our international volunteers got a chance to make some crafts for the NCP classroom walls. The material used was bought through funds donated on the GG platform. It is really inspiring to see people taking time and money out of their own lives to help the less privileged especially children as they are most vulnerable. By doing all that we do we are trying to improve the lives of the less privileged children in Eswatini.
