The beginning of this year saw our centre expanding slightly, and therefore we are able to offer a few more spaces for children from the poorer communities in our social responsibilty project. We have dedicated 30% of our total class number towards this project.
Last year we started our project with two children. Seilin and Mackenzie: both children have families who live and work on farms. Both have remained in our enrolment, and both have continued to develop their motor, cognitive, language and social skills. Both children have the use of English as well as their home language, afrikaans.
This year, Mackenzie turns 2 and Seilin will turn 4.
This year, we have three more children who have joined our project. All three children have family that work and live on the same farm nearby.
Kayslin is 1 years old. She is developing gross-motor skills such as walking steadily, carrying objects, using the slide; fine-motor skills such as using different grasps and wrist movements to perform actions needed in activities that develop the hand and coordination; and developing language skills such as repeating words, singing tunes, and following basic commands such as ,"come with me".
MJ (Marco Junior) is 2 years old. He is developing gross-motor skills such as climbing, running and jumping; developing refined fine-motor skills needed in activities such as scribbling, snipping, gluing and flower arranging; and language skills such as increasing his vocabulary skills to include English in his vocabulary.
Mackenzie, Kayslin and MJ are in our Young Children's Community group.
Elnay is 3 years old. She has spent much of her class time developing her fine-motor skills and coordination, developing the hand for future use in writing and every day activity. She aslo has worked at developing her cognitive skills; she has learnt how to do simple puzzles and is able to match. She has developed strength and confidence in her large movements.
She has also developed confidence in herself, and has begun to make friends. She already has developed a good use of the English language and spends a lot of time talking with her friends. She loves singing songs.
Elnay and Seilin are in our 3-6yrs casa group.
