By Matias Bustamante | Physiotherapist - Kinesiologist
Julissa, a bright young girl living in a mountainous area outside Cochabamba, has been receiving physiotherapy sessions at home. This dedicated therapy program helped her overcome challenges resulting from a childhood accident and has been possible through Tukuy Pacha team’s work and the support of donors like you and Chalice Canada.
As a baby, Julissa fell from a traditional aguayo, a woven cloth used for carrying. This unfortunate event caused intracranial hematomas and led to athetosic cerebral palsy. Despite the physical limitations this presents, particularly with standing and walking, Julissa's spirit shines through. During each therapy session, she demonstrates a remarkable willingness to participate and a positive attitude that is truly inspiring.
Julissa's journey isn't one she walks alone. Her close-knit family, including her brother, cousin, grandparents, and aunt, are actively involved in her rehabilitation, providing unwavering support and encouragement. Their commitment extends beyond emotional support – Julissa's grandfather even built adapted parallel bars for her home, showcasing his ingenuity and dedication.
Through consistent physiotherapy sessions, Julissa has made impressive progress. Her leg strength, balance, and stability have all improved significantly. A notable milestone is overcoming her fear of standing independently, even for short periods. These achievements are a testament to Julissa's perseverance and the effectiveness of the home therapy program.
The home visits provide a positive and supportive environment that benefits everyone involved. Witnessing Julissa's progress brings a sense of satisfaction for both the therapist and her family. This collaborative approach to rehabilitation fosters a sense of hope and empowers Julissa to reach her full potential.
