By Carrie Strohl | Lead Dirt Girl
Three years ago, we hosted a virtual sendoff for four participants as they were promoted to middle school. I called them the "original" Dirt Girls, in part because they had been in the program since its inception in 2016 (as second graders), but mostly for their uniqueness.
Every Dirt Girl is one of a kind!
The transition from 8 to 11 years old is a significant one. Like the plants we nurtured in the school garden, I witnessed the girls grow through weekly program sessions from 2016-2020. Due to the pandemic, I missed seeing their transition from 11 to 14 years. I feel fortunate that I'm still in touch with a few parents, so I got to see some beautiful eighth-grade promotion photos a few weeks ago.
As the original Dirt Girls start high school, Dirt Girls Greenhouse will also matriculate. Building on the partnership we established in 2022, we hope to expand the cross-age relationships we built with current high-school graduates through internship-style sessions focused on native plant propagation. Stay tuned for more updates.
We are so grateful for your ongoing support.
From the field,
Carrie
