Summary

We've seen first-hand the incredible power that technology can have to improve the lives of those who need it most. This project will use mobile tablets to support local groups such as students, farmers and enterprising women, to build skills and future prospects. We work with local partners and use apps to target a wide variety of issues, such as improving numeracy and literacy, providing information on local crop pests and diseases, and teaching basic IT and business skills.

Challenge

A lack of access to information and support in rural Kenyan communities intensifies existing challenges to livelihoods. In schools this can mean student pass rates are incredibly low, with many failing to achieve basic numeracy and literacy. On farms this can mean that when pests or diseases strike, it is unclear how to save crops. For enterprising women this can mean that despite their hard work, it is a struggle to sustain a profitable business.

Solution

We provide technology and ongoing support to local teams who work directly within a community. We work closely with the teams, as well as content developers and international experts to create targeted interventions that use mobile tablets to improve livelihoods. These have included using dedicated numeracy and literacy apps on a daily basis to boost core learning in primary schools, and offering regular workshops for farmers to learn more about local pests and diseases.

Long-Term Impact

In the first 9 months of running this project we managed to reach out to more than 2000 people through a combination of over 100 training workshops, school visits and events. There has been an overwhelmingly positive response so far, and we are looking to build on its success. We would like to partner with more schools, local groups and community organisations, and expand our activities to improve livelihoods for a further 2000 people through access to technology, education and support.
