Just two months out from the end of the Global Giving Accelerator, Hope for Our Sisters is excited to share some news from the Wellness Clinic in Goma, Democractic Republic of Congo (DRC). With your help between mid-September and early October, we raised over $12,000 to fund life-saving maternal care for women at this clinic.
The World Health Organization speculates that 830 women die each day from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth - and 99% of these deaths are occuring in developing countries like DRC. One way to intervene in dangerous labor and delivery scenarios is to provide immediate relief with timely, high-quality cesarean deliveries (c-sections) for women and infants in need of them. However, in many countries, such surgical procedures are costly, and a woman may be denied because of her inability to pay.
Our partners at the Wellness Clinic informed us that between September and November of this year, 39 cesarean deliveries were provided by way of your generous investments. The fee for a cesarean delivery at the clinic is $120 USD - an astronomical amount of money for many people living in developing nations, and yet what is needed by this reputable clinic in order to remain operational. Of the women who needed surgical deliveries, 28 could make partial payments and 11 could pay nothing at all. Our fund made up the difference so that these women were able to receive the care they needed. Closing financial gaps between patients and care providers is just one way that we can help reduce barriers to maternal care in places like Goma.
Thank you for partnering with us to give these women and their babies the best possible outcome. Much work needs to be done across the world to ensure that health equity thrives even in the harshest of places, and your support is a step in that very direction.
Wishing you Happy Holidays and a bright New Year!
