Anniversary of the Struggle in Defense of the Land and Territory

San Francisco Teopisca

On November 30, 2024, the community of San Francisco Teopisca commemorated 19 years of struggle and resistance in defense of their land, territory and identity. During this period, they have worked on the construction of their autonomy and the preservation of their natural and cultural resources.

Over the years, the community has faced various challenges, including threats of eviction and conflicts related to land tenure. However, they have remained committed to defending their rights and promoting community development.

The community of San Francisco Teopisca is part of a larger movement in Chiapas (CNI) “Congreso Nacional Indígena”, where various indigenous and peasant communities are fighting for the defense of their territories and the construction of autonomous alternatives against projects that they consider lewd to their environment and culture.

On the occasion of their anniversary, the community of San Francisco, Teopisca, pronounced themselves reaffirming their determination to continue the struggle for justice, autonomy and preservation of their cultural identity, despite the challenges they have faced and continue to face.

This moment has been an occasion for celebration, and we want to share this good news where the results of the struggle and resistance are reflected. And through this community we learn that if we love the land, we must defend it and take care of it.

We resist for our land, we want peace.

Dear friends:

Today, defending the land has become a risky task. There are more and more interests to dominate the territory, to sow terror and to have total control of the economy and the daily activities of the population in Chiapas. There are many interests that prevent the struggle for the territory and its defense. The land must be defended when its exploitation is sought, without respecting it or the people who inhabit it, work it and obtain their sustenance from it.

Since the last 3 years, violence has increased in the state; causing fear in the population, generating a crisis of forced displacement in different areas; increasing the number of disappeared and murdered people; the indifference of the authorities has allowed criminal organizations to dominate, invade and put an end to the peace that reigned in the towns and communities of Chiapas.

From Frayba, we reinforce our commitment to continue fighting and walking side by side with the people for the defense of the land and we bet together for the construction of peace in the territory. We raise our voices and denounce the grave violations of human rights that occur daily in Chiapas and that have such serious consequences for its inhabitants. We carry out joint actions to have the necessary strength to make known what is happening in our state.
This leads us to unite our hearts for the love of our land and to resist, despite the difficulties, the climate of violence and insecurity.

Promote and encourage the construction of peace, learning from the struggle and resistance of the people, renewing our commitment to walk with them to defend mother earth. From Chiapas we call to be united and avoid the division that the government promotes to keep us confronted, generating divisions to avoid fighting for what we should respect and love; because it is the heritage of our parents, of our ancestors. Because we love and defend mother earth, we will continue to fight for peace!
