With the help of GlobalGiving, The Green Mountain Conservancy has raised the funds to purchase Phase II of the Deer Run Nature Preserve. We are continuing to raise funds for taxes, closing costs, and the endowment for maintenace and conservation. When the purchase is complete, the Preserve will be 913 glorious acres -- woodland, ridge top, pristine fields and over 2.5 miles of river frontage.
However, due to pandemic related issues, the closing process is moving very slowly. Hopefully, in the next two months, all the paperwork will be completed and the 626 acre Phase II parcel will become part of the Preserve and be conserved forever, a refuge for multitudes of animal and plant species. Although we already know of the incredible diversity of this land, plans are in place to document plants, animals, birds and natural communities this summer, and to build several hiking trails.
The trail to “the monument” on the Phase I parcel has seen continued use throughout the past year. Hikers continue to marvel at the diversity of the terrain and plant life, and the incredible views. Soon the indigo buntings will again be singing near the power line junction. The leaves will be coming out, and Spring ephemerals will be showing their colors.
See you on the trail,
The Board of GMC
