Cyclone Yaku hit Peru at the beginning of March 2023. The Peruvian National Meteorological and Hydrological Service (SENAMHI) described it as as an "unorganised tropical cyclone" not seen since 1983 or 1998. Yaku impacted the life of many Peruvians, among them, the 2500 families of Rio Seco in Cieneguilla (Lima). Rio Seco's population is settled in the ravines of the area. The mudslides originated by Cyclone have destroyed their houses and leave them with nothing: no house, food or clothes.
The impact of the cyclone has left 2500 families without houses, clothes or food. The houses are divided in 40 blocks and the population have organised properly to, for instance, cook together. However, they don't have the support to buy the ingredients to prepare their lunches, or to buy the water they need to drink or to buy clothes as everything was destroyed by Yaku. The struggle of their socio-economic status leave them without a possibility to be relocated
We are focused on help them with their urgent need: food, water and clothes. As Yaku destroyed their houses and left them with nothing, they are currently living in tents and waiting for the mud to dry in order to start with cleaning and building again their houses. Food, water and clothes are need that we, human beings, cannot pospone and we want to help them.
After we meet their urgent needs, we will be working hand in hand with them in the reconstruction of their houses and neighbours but we can't do it, without taking care of their basic needs: food, water and clothes.
