Toendepi also shared, “Roads and bridges have been swept away so the rescue and response efforts are very challenging. There are only six helicopters bringing in supplies, dropping them to stranded survivors and also airlifting out the most vulnerable.
“I saw people desperately trying to dig out a 16 year old boy who was buried under the rubble. It was heartbreaking. Mass burials are taking place with more than 30 people being buried together in a mass grave. It is very difficult to identify who people are which is devastating for families.
“People have lost their homes, livestock and livelihoods. They are in dire need of food, water, shelter and medicine … I have never seen such devastation before. The need on the ground is enormous.”
