Cyclone Idai has swept through Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe, leaving behind a trail of destruction, killing hundreds of people and affecting an estimated 2.6 million people.
The full scale of the disaster is still unfolding as search and rescue operations continue and more heavy rain is predicted. The United Nations believes that this may be one of the worst weather-related disasters on record in the southern hemisphere.
“Desperate survivors are waiting to be rescued from the tops of buildings. Rescuers are working round the clock but fear they don’t have the resources to rescue everyone. The worst affected areas are cut off from the rest of the country, without communication or power," shares Marcia Cossa, Head of Programmes, ActionAid Mozambique.
“With rain continuing to fall the situation on the ground is dire. Busi district is almost entirely under water. In desperation families are wading through water to try and reach safe ground.”
