2024/2025 Cycling Project Report

Inspiring Growth: The Prochorus Cycling Programme

The Prochorus Cycling Programme provides children of all ages the invaluable opportunity to learn how to cycle and embrace the life lessons that come with it. Beginning as early as six, more than 15 children mastered the fundamentals of cycling throughout the year. They progressed from riding single-gear bicycles on the tennis court to confidently handling geared bicycles in the breathtaking Jonkershoek Nature Reserve.

With each passing session, this group grew in both skill and confidence. They learned to stop, turn, and navigate rocky, uneven terrain, developing resilience and determination. By the year’s end, several children had advanced to using geared bicycles, mastering the art of shifting gears to enhance their riding experience. Their boundless enthusiasm was infectious, making witnessing their growth and deepening love for cycling immensely rewarding.

Empowering Young Girls Through Cycling

The number of girls participating in the programme has expanded dramatically over the past year. At the close of 2023, only one or two girls were actively cycling. However, by the end of 2024, this number had risen to over eight—a testament to their growing passion and commitment.

These young riders faced a steep learning curve, with many starting the year on single-gear bicycles. Through perseverance and dedication, they mastered essential skills such as changing gears, navigating single-track trails, pumping tyres, and reattaching chains. They rode with confidence on a challenging trail.

Not only did they challenge themselves on the trails, but they also participated in two races, demonstrating remarkable improvement between events. Their enthusiasm is unwavering, and they are eager to compete in the Western Cape Schools Cycling League this year.

This group of young cyclists is genuinely inspiring—disciplined, enthusiastic, and endlessly supportive of one another. They continuously encourage their peers to push forward, fostering a strong sense of camaraderie. In the coming year, they will focus on building confidence in downhill sections and refining their race strategies to enhance their competitive edge. Excitingly, the four eldest girls will be trying out for the Hoërskool Stellenbosch cycling bursary—a fantastic opportunity to put their skills to the test.

I eagerly anticipate witnessing the incredible progress these determined and passionate young cyclists will achieve in the year ahead!

Ending 2024 on a High Note

The Prochorus Cycling Project concluded the year with remarkable achievements. Two of our senior riders took on the prestigious FNB Wines to Whales Shiraz from November 8th to 10th. Displaying incredible endurance and determination, they completed the three-stage event at 10:56:20, securing the 38th position in their category.

The momentum continued the following week when an additional senior rider joined the team to compete in the two-stage Savanna Origin of Trails race. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Stellenbosch mountains and farms. This event tested both skill and perseverance. While familiarity with the terrain provided some advantages, the experience ultimately proved the deciding factor. The riders secured commendable placements, with one finishing in the top 30, another in the top 50, and the third in the top 60 of the overall standings. These results showcased their individual growth and the team’s collective progress.

Holiday Cycling: Laying the Foundations for Success

As 2024 drew to a close, some team members took a well-deserved holiday break, while others embarked on a dedicated holiday cycling programme. This initiative was particularly crucial for one of our promising riders, who successfully earned a place in the esteemed Endurocart bursary recruitment. The programme was not just about maintaining fitness but also about fostering a mindset of discipline and excellence. Those who remained engaged in cycling used this period as a stepping stone towards a stronger start to 2025.

Embracing 2025 with Enthusiasm and Determination

The new year begins with an inspiring sense of ambition and unity. The Prochorus Cycling Project proudly kicks off 2025 with 29 riders: 12 Seniors, 10 Girls, and 7 Junior Boys. With this diverse group, the team is poised for an exciting season filled with challenges and opportunities for growth.

More than just a sporting endeavour, our project continues to be a family—supporting each other on and off the track. We look ahead with high hopes for further development, both in competitive performance and academically and spiritually. The road ahead is paved with promise, and with the dedication and passion of our riders, 2025 is set to be a year of achievement, camaraderie, and personal triumphs.

Let’s ride towards greatness together!
