BOGOTÁ: OPPORTUNITIES FOR 120 CHILDREN & YOUNGTERS

The Zuá Foundation develops a dynamic process, with a view to offering quality experiences to the beneficiary girls, boys, and young people. Among the processes and activities of this last period it is worth mentioning the following:

Reorganization of groups by performance level: A tutor meeting is held monthly, in which the way in which they work with the children is evaluated and the main difficulties with each one is identified. At the March meeting, problems associated with the academic level of each student were detected. While in each group there were students with an advanced level, there were those at an intermediate level and others very behind in reading, writing, mathematics, and English.

Some concerns that motivated this initiative were: Overage children in schools, very low levels in reading and writing, little time to carry out academic reinforcement due to access to tasks that they do not understand, children who are advanced for the grade they are in. and who cannot advance further, opportunity and motivation to improve in the Foundation and in the school, difficulties sometimes in carrying out personalized reinforcement that does not allow them to advance with commitment and enthusiasm.

The decision was to evaluate each child to identify the real level in each of these areas and, depending on their level, they were placed in the group corresponding to their level. This is how the groups were reorganized no longer by age or grade at school, but by their level in each area. This meant that each new group received specific attention, appropriate to their needs, and students were challenged so that they could be promoted to a level as they achieved the performance to advance to the next level.

Musical training. The development of artistic activities continues by groups and days, in accordance with musical knowledge and experiences. An Instrument group (strings and/or keyboard) was created so that students with a greater affinity for music can delve deeper, learning more about the theory, practice, and technique of performing. Through the music workshops at the Foundation, most students have had the opportunity to participate in the basic learning of written musical language, and in the instrumental and/or vocal assembly of the themes or songs that have been implemented there.  They are children and young people who have shown effort in memorizing melodic and rhythmic lines, or who demonstrate their discipline and responsibility when performing exercises to learn an instrument. Surely, all this is also reflected in learning in classrooms in areas other than music. In the experience within the Foundation, we have experienced closely the process that several students have had in their relationship with music, from children or young people who did not show musical facility, to others, who immediately and without themselves knowing it, gave clear signs of having that natural quality, that ear that some are born with. 

Complete pedagogical activities: Different activities continue to be carried out that allow children to develop new concerns and understandings of the world, such as outings to different places such as the one I did last month to Maloka, which is an interactive science museum. The 16 boys and girls who take part in the Circus Workshop participated in this activity. This was a very enriching outing that managed to plant in the children a lot of questions about natural phenomena, the origin of the planets, some experiments, microscopic life, among many others, to which the local people were giving answers. It is a scenario that manages to take the child to another world full of a lot of science and learning. 

Story competition: This month the first story contest was launched for children at the Patio Bonito headquarters, so that they can dedicate some of their time to the exercise of writing, reading, and developing their imagination. The theme of the story is; My favorite hero or heroine, they must choose a person who is very special to them and give them some special abilities or powers and tell some of their exploits. The story must be written by hand and have between one and three pages to be able to participate.

La Fundación Zuá desarrolla un proceso dinámico, con miras a ofrecer experiencias de calidad a las niñas, niños y jóvenes beneficiarios. Dentro de los procesos y actividades de este último periodo cabe mencionar los siguientes;

Reorganización de los grupos por nivel de desempeño: Mensualmente se hace una reunión de tutores, en la que se evalúa la forma como se trabaja con los niños y se identifican las principales dificultades con cada uno. En la reunión de marzo se detectaron problemas asociados al nivel académico de cada estudiante. Mientras en cada grupo había estudiantes con un nivel avanzado, los había en nivel medio y otros muy atrasados en lecto escritura, matemáticas e inglés.

Algunas inquietudes que motivaron esta iniciativa fueron: Niños con extra-edad en los colegios, muy bajos niveles en lectura y escritura, poco tiempo para realizar refuerzos académicos por acceso de tareas que no entienden, niños que están avanzados para el curso en el que están y que no logran avanzar más, oportunidad y motivación para mejorar en la Fundación y en el colegio, dificultades a veces para realizar un refuerzo personalizado que no les permite avanzar con compromiso y entusiasmo.

La decisión fue evaluar cada niño para identificar el nivel real en cada una de estas áreas y según su nivel se ubicaba en el grupo correspondiente a su nivel. Así fue como se reorganizaron los grupos ya no por edades o grado que cursa en su escuela, sino por sus niveles en cada área. Esto hizo que cada nivel reciba una atención específica adecuado a sus necesidades y se retó a los estudiantes para que puedan ser promovidos de nivel en la medida que alcancen el desempeño para avanzar al siguiente nivel.

Formación musical. Se continua el desarrollo de actividades artísticas por grupos y jornadas, de acuerdo con los conocimientos y experiencias musicales. Se creó un grupo de Instrumento (cuerdasy/o teclado) para que los estudiantes con mayor afinidad con la música puedanahondar,aprendiendomásacercadelateoría,laprácticaylatécnicaparainterpretar. Mediante los talleres de música en la Fundación, la mayoría de los estudiantes han tenido la oportunidad de participar en el aprendizaje básico del lenguaje musical escrito, y en el montaje instrumental y/o vocal de los temas o canciones que allí se han venido implementando.

Son niños y jóvenes que han mostrado esfuerzo en el hecho de memorizar líneas melódicas y rítmicas, o que ponen en evidencia su disciplina y responsabilidad al realizar ejercicios para aprender un instrumento. Seguramente, todo esto se vea reflejado también en el aprendizaje dentro de las aulas en otras áreas distintas a la música.

En la experiencia dentro de la Fundación, hemos vivido de cerca el proceso que han tenido varios estudiantes en su relación con la música, desde niños o jóvenes que no mostraban tener facilidad musical, hasta otros, que de inmediato y sin ellos mismos saberlo, daban muestras claras de tener esa cualidad natural, ese oído con el que algunos nacen.

Actividades pedagógicas completarías: Se continúan realizando diferentes actividades que permiten a los niños desarrollar nuevas inquietudes y comprensiones del mundo, tales como salidas a diferentes sitios como la que se realizó el mes pasado a Maloka, museo interactivo de ciencia, para los niños y niñas que participan del Taller de Circo y en total participaron 16 niños. Esta fue una salida muy enriquecedora que logro sembrar en los niños cantidad de preguntas sobre, fenómenos naturales, origen de los planetas, algunos experimentos, la vida microscópica, entro otras tantas, a las que las personas del lugar iban dando respuesta. Es un escenario que logra llevar al niño a otro mundo lleno de mucha ciencia y aprendizajes.

Concurso de cuento; Este mes se lanzó el primer concurso del cuento para los niños de la sede de Patio Bonito, con el fin de que puedan dedicar algo de su tiempo al ejercicio de la escritura, la lectura y el desarrollo de la imaginación. El tema del cuento es; Mi héroe o heroína favorito, deben escoger a una persona que sea muy especial para ellos y darles algunas facultades o poderes especiales y contar alguna de sus hazañas. El cuento debe escribirse a mano y tener entre una y tres hojas para poder participar.
