BOGOTA: OPPORTUNITIES FOR 120 CHILDREN & YOUNGTERS

BOGOTÁ: OPPORTUNITIES FOR 120 CHILDREN & YOUNGTERS

By   Moisés Pedraza – director Fundación ZUÁ

First of all, thousands of thanks to those who support the girls, boys, and young people we serve at the Zuá Foundation. These grants, although small in relation to the total resources, are very important to fulfill the Foundation's plans. It should also be noted that the Foundation operates on a volunteer basis, which means that all the resources received are used to cover the needs of the beneficiary population and not to administer the Foundation.

It is also important to add that beneficiaries must, in some way, provide compensation in exchange for the services they receive. For example, the children's mothers must contribute 4 hours a week, helping to prepare food, in cleaning tasks, or directly accompanying the groups of children. Young people who are admitted to the pre-university course, which lasts 1 year, must dedicate 20 hours a week to caring for young children. For students who pass the pre-university course, the Foundation finances their degree and pays their tuition semester by semester, on the condition that they also dedicate 20 hours a week to caring for young children, at the time allowed by their university studies. Also, the children themselves, as they learn, are invited to teach the younger ones what they have already learned, in what we call the cascade effect.

In the case of the 2 urban centers of Patio Bonito and Bosa, 2 located in the city of Bogotá, children are offered daily meals from Monday to Friday, those at the morning headquarters have breakfast and lunch, and those at the the afternoon lunch and refreshments. The morning session, in which children who go to school in the afternoon participate, runs from 7:30 to 11 and the afternoon session runs from 2 to 5:30. Both in the morning and in the afternoon, they are given school reinforcement and workshops in arts, mathematics, reading and writing, and English. Once the boys finish high school, they are invited to enter the pre-university course, which is organized by the same Foundation and lasts 1 year, normally 8 boys enter. What they do was already mentioned above. Currently, we have 16 kids pursuing a university degree, fully financed by the Foundation.

In the rural headquarters we have 16 boys from the Department of Cauca, who also arrive in number of 8 each year to attend pre-university and once they finish they enter university, the first 3 semesters virtually. There are already 8 kids from this program at the University. It should be said that these children come from a department that has been hit hard by violence of different types, from very poor families, so they must be helped with accommodation, food, resources to study such as computers and the Internet, and in return, they help with the headquarters tasks, such as cooking, maintenance and tending to crops and animals for self-consumption.

There are more and more girls, boys, and young people who require help and that is a big challenge since it is already known that the Foundation's programs are really effective and help these children to dream and make their dreams come true. However, we require help, we must multiply the sources to respond to so many children who, if they do not receive help, cannot move forward.

Thousands of thanks to all our donors for their recurring support in favor of the Zuá Foundation

BOGOTÁ: OPPORTUNITIES FOR 120 CHILDREN & YOUNGTERS

By   Moisés Pedraza – director Fundación ZUÁ
