BOGOTA: OPPORTUNITIES FOR 120 CHILDREN & YOUNGTERS

BOGOTÁ: OPPORTUNITIES FOR 120 CHILDREN & YOUNGTERS

By   Moisés Pedraza – director Fundación ZUÁ

First of all, thanks to those who help us through GlobalGiving, because their contribution, together with others, allows us to serve a very vulnerable population and give them the opportunity to dream and make their dreams come true.

In this report, we are going to show our friends the activities of a normal day, at the Bosa headquarters, a very poor suburb of the city of Bogotá. There we serve 36 girls and boys and young people who are part of a total of 130 that add up to the three headquarters that the Foundation has.

Getting to the hall is a feat, because, in the rainy season, which has been most of the year, it is terrible mud, while in dry weather, the wind raises dust that invades the lungs.

However, at 7:30 in the morning, one finds them there happy, like such conditions do not matter at all, as long as they arrive and find four persons who welcome them with a hug and then offer them a hot breakfast.

There are children from the age of 5 to some who are already finishing high school, a total of 18 in the morning and 18 in the afternoon. It is a small group, because we only have a rented garage, on the first floor, and there the coordinator and two tutors in the morning and two in the afternoon, organize the children to develop learning processes through academic, artistic, and sports activities.

Several of these children are already over 10 years old and have never been to school, therefore, they do not have the minimum knowledge for life, so the Foundation is the only opportunity to learn to read, write, add and subtract, and other elementary knowledge. The tutors are aware that the time they dedicate to these children is a unique opportunity to mark the future of these Colombians and Venezuelans punished by the reality they live in. Fortunately, in most of these cases, these children are admitted to the schools.

The tutors and the coordinator ensure that these children are motivated to learn, to discover the world of opportunities that lie behind learning. They peek into this world through books, computers, and tablets, which although insufficient, are enough for each one to use for a short time.

There is time to sing and dance. There is time to play, read and write, and around 11 am in the morning, they receive a lunch prepared with the best condiment called love. After noon, the coordinator and tutors organize the room to receive other boys who, with the same attitude, arrive at 1 pm in the afternoon and follow a routine similar to those in the morning until 5 pm in the afternoon, when they receive a snack before going home.

We want to share with all our friends the deep satisfaction that we feel at the end of each day and see in these children the joyful face with which they express their gratitude and also see, in most of them, considerable progress in their behavior and in their growth as human beings.

Please, feel that these are also your achievements because without your help we would not achieve them.

BOGOTÁ: OPPORTUNITIES FOR 120 CHILDREN & YOUNGTERS
