Join us in empowering HIV positive adolescents by training some among them as champions, training teachers, conducting per outreaches in schools and reaching policy makers in Kenya. This will allow them to support themselves, their peers and their families into the future, help reduce HIV associated stigma and discrimination and enhance self esteem leading to an improved quality of life. Our intended project goal is to create 50 HIV+ Adolescents Rights Champions in Kenya.
The needs of adolescents living with HIV are much more sensitive & varied than those of adults, as they must simultaneously deal with adult issues like disclosure, practicing safe sex, and adhering to treatment, while also addressing issues associated with adolescence such as first sexual experience & peer pressure. About 7,500 adolescents in Kenya died of HIV last year; the number of HIV+ adolescents is likely to increase as most adolescents practice sex with their peers without any knowledge.
Our quest is to bring an approach to HIV prevention that responds to the changing challenges young people face at different ages. By training teachers in schools, training champions drawn from adolescents living with HIV to advance their issues, conducting peer outreaches in schools and having consultative forums to reach out to policy maker. SIXKNM will create an enabling environment in schools, reduce stigma and discrimination and enhance adolescents living with HIV self esteem.
SIXKNM Self-Help Group is partnering with Global Giving to raise funds to reach out to a forgotten disadvantaged population of adolescents living with HIV. SIXKNM bring new and innovative ways to enhance talks about sex, disclosure, and health needs for HIV-positive adolescents that are likely to reduce HIV infections. Our goal ensures that Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) and other livelihoods needs of adolescents living with HIV/AIDS in Nakuru County, Kenya are addressed.
