Craft2Gether February 2022 Report

Happy February! It's the month for love, and if you're reading this report it's very likely because you've shown love for kiddos and craft. Thank you!

We've been busy applying for grants to help support our growing Craft2Gether program. We've been working hard at creating new kits too! We've started working with a new organization that serves children and adults with autism. We'll be working with both adults and children once a month with craft projects and arts education. The great thing about craft and San Diego Craft Collective is that we're able to meet students wherever their skill level is. So even if they can't safely handle a woodworking saw, we can tailor the project to their ability and they can still participate and feel empowered.

We launched a new Giraffe Craft Kit that we've tested with kindergarteners, 1st graders, and students with autism. It's a hit! So we've made it official. What we love about this kit is how simple and versatile it is. The different steps that the children complete take them through various tasks that build dexterity such as beading. They sand and shape pieces of already-cut wood (we reuse scraps from other projects, making it eco-friendly). The amount of creativity and focus that the children display has been heartwarming. It's a joy to watch them make decisions about composition and personalize their animals. Sometimes the giraffe morphs into a cat or a cheetah. Sometimes the teacher sample is followed loosely as an inspirational jumping off point, and sometimes the children have their own different vision entirely. We welcome it all!

We're also excited to bring in 2 highschool interns this month. Both will be working with our artists/craftspeople in-house on creating new kits in craft mediums that we have not yet explored: clay and glass. This will be exciting for a couple of reasons: 1- the interns are going to learn about clay and glass... neither have prior experience in either medium, but they're interested in learning, and we're more than happy to facilitate a new adventure for them! 2- we're designing kits in new craft mediums that will further our Craft2Gether program and offer even more opportunities for San Diego children.

Thank you for helping us empower children through craft! Please continue to support us in any way you can.

Kind regards,

Steffi & the Craft Collective Team
