The project provides water, food and basic necessities to the street children and their families in Bombay. The entire population of the city is confined due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and more of 40,000 children live in the streets while their families are unable to work to meet their essential needs. In the current situation, they are more threatened by hunger than by the virus. We intend to reach at least 3,600 children and their families with food and hygienic products.
On March 24, the Indian government confined the entire population to stop the spread of Covid-19. A totally necessary measure from the epidemiological point of view, it is, in return, a serious problem for our constituents at Bombay, as they usually carry out sporadic and informal economic activities allowing them to cover their daily needs on time, but not to save any amount for the future. The economic breakdown prevents them from accessing to basic resources for their daily subsistence.
Sonrisas de Bombay will provide 3,600 street children and their families, as well as other constituents, with food packages and sanitary products that guarantee coverage of their basic needs during the period of confinement by Covid-19. Up to date we have been able to provide food and hygienic products to more than 10,000 constituents, but as long as the lockdown is extended, there's the need to keep distributing them.
Sonrisas de Bombay is implementing long term development projects with street children, as well as human trafficking survivors and slum dwellers in the most underprivileged areas of Bombay. In the current context, we'll provide support to the constituents so they can survive and remain healthy during the lockdown, and once back to normal, we will be able to take over again our development projects.
