SPANS is a pioneering perinatal mental health care organization in Zimbabwe, providing mental health care across the life span using a family centered approach. We do so by: Mental health education-prevention is better than cure so we educating women about the importance of sound mental health; Training the next generation of family therapists: SPANS initiated a diploma and We are the organisers of the "International Conference On Maternal Mental Health in Africa" (ICAMMHA).
Nearly 1 billion people across the world suffer from mental illness. The global prevalence of antenatal depression is estimated at 15% while in Zimbabwe a study conducted in Harare polyclinics found that 23% of pregnant women experienced prenatal depression (Kaiyo-Utete et al., 2020). According to the WHO Special Initiative for Mental Health (2020), "Zimbabwe has a severe shortage of human resources for mental health, as the sector has been underserved for years.
We do so by: Mental health education-educating women about the importance of sound mental health. Training the next generation of family therapists: SPANS initiated a diploma in Systemic Family to close Zimbabwe's human resource gap. Individual and Family Therapy Sessions :SPANS uses the systemic thinking in addressing mental health problems that affect families. Community Awareness Raising: We are the organisers of the "International Conference On Maternal Mental Health in Africa" (ICAMMHA).
Family Mental Health will increase education, awareness, acceptance, accessibility of mental health care in communities and improve sound mental health and wellbeing of the community. Also reduced stigma and discrimination which is the barrier is seeking mental health care services.
