In September of 2020, in the midst of the worldwide Covid 19 pandemic, a retired educator and new BYU-I-Pathway Worldwide missionary contacted a friend in Kinshasa DRC about a serious problem. Near the same time, another Pathway missionary and retired accountant contacted the same man, Steve Mutumbo. Steve was a successful university graduate who earlier had enrolled in Pathway in order to understand the program. All three were concerned about the same problem: Their African Pathway students could not complete assignments on old smart phones. And thus, The Lord’s Hands was born!
During the past four years, more than 1400 lives have been dramatically changed as computers have been awarded to Pathway students in 28 African countries! The results are incredible!
G., awarded a computer in 2021, will graduate Ensign College in December with a 3.93 GPA. This remarkable single mother supports three children, serves in a responsible calling in her Church, voluntarily teaches an evening religious class, and recently was hired by a large organization to a position generally requiring a Master’s degree. The Lord’s Hands computer changed her life.
M., father of four, who could not support his growing family as a teacher in DRC as the public school system imploded, improved his employment opportunities by earning business and management Certificates from BYU-I. He continues to take university courses. Pathway and The Lord’s Hands computer changed his life.
R., single mother of three, in a remote, rural area of Uganda, has started two successful businesses from the skills and confidence gained from Certificates in Construction Management and Business earned at Ensign College. University courses would have been impossible without the computer from The Lord’s Hands. She continues to take courses. The Lord’s Hands changed her life.
J., a returned missionary from Burundi, moved to Kanya to find any employment. During the three years since receiving a computer, he has completed 78 credits from BYU-I with a 3.098 GPA and will graduate this spring! The Lord’s Hands changed his life.
BYU-Pathway Worldwide is an incredible bridge to higher education. But for many students in Africa, it is a bridge which cannot be crossed. It is a bridge too far without a computer. Students learn much from the Life Skills and Professional Skills taught in Pathway, but to continue to BYU-I or Ensign College is beyond their reach without a computer. The computers awarded by The Lord’s Hands enable students to cross that bridge to university and change their lives. YOUR generous donations support that bridge!
The Lord's Hands is in the middle of another compaign to award computers to outstanding students throughout Africa. More than 200 lives will be changed as a result of your donations and the many volunteers, our Trusted Contacts, who deliver these computers throughout Africa.
We excitedly anticipate changing many more lives in the next four years!
