This initiative seeks to engage children (4-12 year olds) and their parents in fun-filled reading activities and parenting talks. The intention is to make the children fall in love with books, LEARN to READ so they can READ to LEARN and deeply get parents involved in their education.
The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have pushed over 15 million Ugandan school going children out of school. While the lockdown only created a temporary out-of-school problem, prolonged closure of schools is making being out of school permanent for some children, especially older ones that are being lured into petty jobs, early marriages or as we have seen, many girls getting pregnant and we know that in many communities especially those in rural Uganda, that means no more school.
We will engage with children and their parents in rural communities with the aim of improving literacy so as to obtain better learning outcomes. This will be through fun-filled reading activities, read alouds and parenting sessions where parents receive parenting books that share the value of love. The children will receive locally relevant, beautifully illustrated books are educational and value-based and will keep them interested in learning and looking forward to getting back to school.
The project will ignite children's eagerness to learn to read in order to read to learn and eventually improve their academic performance in the long run. Children will be able and willing to learn irrespective of what stage of life or their socio-economic background. The parents will be fully engaged and ready to intentionally give of themselves to ensure that their children continue to learn while at home.
