Update #22 - New Momentum for Yronelis

By Juana Rodriguez | Program Coordinator, Community Health Leadership

Yronelis used to be stuck.

She took care of her three children and her husband, but she had no motivation to do anything for herself.

Until one day a neighbor, Ramona, told her about a health class she should take.

Ramona had recently graduated from Project Hearts’ Community Health Leadership course, and was now encouraging other women to enroll as well. She managed to convince two of her neighbors, Yronelis and Josefina, both of whom ended up graduating in December 2024.

Yronelis says that the CHL training program taught her a lot of new information and introduced her to new people, but more than anything it gave her the push she needed to break out of her routine.

She found the health topics really interesting, and hopes to enroll in nursing classes to continue learning. In the meantime Yronelis is helping people in her neighborhood of Guardarraya when they are sick or need insulin injections.

Since graduating, Yronelis also started her own business, making and selling fast food, which is not only earning her an income, but exponentially increasing her self-esteem and sense of accomplishment.

Yronelis credits the CHL Program Coordinator, Juana, and her fellow students, with creating an environment where she was seen as capable and strong, giving her the confidence and inspiration to pursue her dreams.

Yronelis is no longer stuck, and we hope she will follow Ramona’s example of using her momentum as a force to bring positive change to the lives of other women.

In May 2025 we plan to launch another cohort of Community Health Leaders (we already have 7 women who have told us they’re interested in joining!), and we would be immensely grateful for you continuing to support women in Baitoa as they realize their full potential.
