Q1 2024 Community Empowerment update

Maunga Village Community Garden

We will be setting up a community garden in Maunga village. This garden will be a commercial and subsistence garden to drive economic activity in the community, increase food security, and drive positive conservation of wildlife and trees in the area. The 1-hectare plot will have a borehole and drip irrigation, elephant proofing, and fencing. Half of the garden will be commercial, and the produce will be sold to Maunga School for the nutrition program and other markets.

Desired Impact

Creating a sustainable income for the community
Food security for the community
Training and development of farming techniques and practices
Achieving conservation by reducing the need for tree-cutting

Budget

The garden will cost $25,000 to set up. This cost covers:

Clearing the field
Drip irrigation.
Solar and drilling a borehole.
Seedling and farming equipment
Training
Water tanks
Elephant proofing and fencing
Labour and transport
