This project will provide four-year university scholarships (including tuition, room and board, and school supplies) to top scoring high school graduates in the Chumkuri District of Kampot Province, a very poor, rural area of Cambodia where very few female students have the opportunity to go on to college and where few NGOs currently operate. Upon graduation, these scholarship students will have a much better chance at landing a good job, starting a career, and escaping a cycle of poverty.
Since 2015, The Chelly Foundation has been working in the Chumkuri District of Kampot Province (3 hours south of Phnom Penh), to afford educational opportunities to children of all ages. Families in this rural area of Cambodia are mostly very poor farmers, few of whom can provide their daughters with chance for a better life through achieving a university degree and going on to a good job. This project will provide some of the brightest young women in this rural area with that opportunity.
This project will fund two to four graduating seniors each year to go on to the Royal University of Phnom Penh or an equivalent institution. The project will supply up to four years of tuition costs, room and board, and school supplies, provided students remain in good standing. The Chelly Foundation will ensure safe housing for the young women. Only students achieving the highest scores on a national exam and who are without financial means to attend college will be eligible.
A university education will enable these young women to have a much better chance at landing a good job, starting a career, and escaping the cycle of poverty for themselves while helping their families. One of our Chelly Scholars funded through Global Giving just graduated with a degree in accounting. Our Foundation is dedicated to also teaching English to students in Chum Kiri, where scholarship students may one day come back to their village to teach others.
