Thank you for your generous support of our project to establish and operate a small-scale industrial biochar machine in Phrao, Thailand. This initiative allows smallholder farmers to convert crop waste into biochar on a larger scale, improving soil health and food security.
With your contribution, along with donations from two additional supporters, we raised $30,000 to purchase two machines, have them shipped from the Wastex manufacturing facility in Indonesia, and install them on the Warm Heart Campus.
Before the arrival of these machines, we used pyrolysis troughs in the orchards where longan trees had been pruned and the branches dried in the sun. Our team produced biochar on-site, bringing it back to a central location to distribute to local farmers. This biochar was used to enrich the soil, helping retain nutrients and moisture.
With the new equipment, we now take a chipper to the orchards to chop the branches into smaller feedstock, which is then processed in the Wastex machines. This feedstock is being tested and optimized to improve the operating process and pyrolysis settings.
The quality of the biochar being produced appears to be excellent. Our first lab test confirmed this, with the biochar sample showing a high carbon content.
We are continuing to refine the pyrolysis process to eliminate harmful smoke particles from open-field burning and to engage more farmers in nature-based solutions for healthy soil and sustainable food security.
We'll keep you updated, through our Stop the Smoke! program.
With gratitude and good wishes for clear skies,
Dana, Michael, Evelind, and the Biochar Team
