This ocean cleanup nonprofit Ocean Blue Project aims to recover 5 million pounds of plastic and disaster debris from coastal communities hit hardest by hurricanes and other disasters. Every 1 U.S. Dollar donated funds the recovery of 5 pounds of disaster debris. Climate change and warming waters means both coastal communities of people and marine animals need us now more than ever.
If you have experienced a hurricane then you know the devastation such forces of nature have on life and property. Climate change brings warming and rising seas with an increase in flooding which means the outlook for coastal communities and water quality is increasingly worse. According to the Florida Division of Emergency Management, Hurricane Ian alone left behind over 30 million cubic yards of disaster debris and with limited resources the debris response is still lingering 6 months later.
In one of the biggest challenges of climate change, Ocean Blue Project aims to help coastal communities recover long after a storm has passed leaving a path of devastation and engage donors worldwide in our fight against the flow of plastic into our one world ocean. Reaching our goal of 5 million pounds of plastic removed by 2025 will demonstrate how efforts at a grassroots level can significantly impact our fight for plastic-free oceans and inspire communities around the world to follow suit.
In addition to removing disaster debris from our backbays and shorelines, Ocean Blue Project has partnered with university researchers to collect data on the impacts of ocean-borne microplastics in the food chain with the aim of spurring systematic change to reduce the long-term flow of plastics into our marine ecosystem. Furthermore, the technology being developed for ocean plastic cleanup will be applicable to subsequent plastic removal efforts on a global scale.
