Summary

Ocean Blue Project aims to recover 5 million pounds of plastic and disaster debris drifting from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and washing up on beaches. Marine debris washes up on Kamilo Beach daily. Locals call it, "Plastic Beach," and the Ocean Blue Team needs your support to tackle the marine wildlife and human health crisis. Ocean Blue has already cleaned up over 1.6 million pounds of debris in 15 states. Every 1 U.S. Dollar donated funds the recovery of 5lbs of disaster debris.

Challenge

If you have experienced a hurricane then you know the devastation such forces of nature have on life and property. Climate change brings warming and rising seas with an increase in flooding which means the outlook for coastal communities and water quality is increasingly worse. According to the Florida Division of Emergency Management, Hurricane Ian alone left behind over 30 million cubic yards of disaster debris and with limited resources the debris response is still lingering 6 months later.

Solution

Ocean Blue is poised to address the pressing issue of marine debris with a targeted approach to recovering plastic from Kamilo Beach using basic equipment and microplastic extraction technology. By aiming to remove 5 million pounds of this harmful debris, we can restore the natural equilibrium of ecosystems and protect the diverse wildlife that depends on them, including endangered species like Hawaiian monk seals and green sea turtles. Every $1 donated empowers the project to cleanup 5 pounds.

Long-Term Impact

Beyond immediate cleanup, the initiative tackles the profound issue of ocean-borne microplastics, which infiltrate the food chain and pose health risks to both marine life and humans through bioaccumulation. By addressing the roots of this pervasive pollution, the fundraiser not only supports direct action on affected beaches but also aids implementation of microplastic extraction technology. These efforts hold the promise of systemic change, significantly curbing marine pollution.
