Trained as young as 7 years old
Paediatric 1st Aid training! We trained over 200 people in 3 days! It was excited and fulfilling! Educating people to save lives is the ultimate way forward! In eastern Nigeria, where hospitals and other medical facilities are of general poor quality and/or lack of knowledge in medical care, this training will provide some assistance to prolonging the lives of the indigenes and prevent unnecessary death. It is a priceless opportunity!
We delivered this training to several schools and businesses. Children as young as 7 years old attended the training. Unexpectedly we had other businesses like factory workers, rental car companies, shopping mall staff attend the training, it was truly amazing how everybody is hungry for knowledge and thinking of ways to help themselves.
As a recap, this training was designed to teach parents, carers, teachers, and anyone else who encounters people and children in the jobs every day. They learnt the basics of first aid so that they can react appropriately in an emergency.
In the Paediatric First Aid training course we covered the following:
The Primary Survey
This outlines why knowledge of first aid is so important, details the essential items for a first aid kit, and explains the steps of the primary survey
• The aim of first aid
• Your first aid box
• The primary survey: danger, response, airway and breathing
The Secondary Survey
This outlines how to put children and infant casualties into the recovery position.
• Steps of the secondary survey
• When to go to the hospital
• The recovery position
• The recovery position for infants • Unconscious casualties
• Choking
• Wounds and bleeding • Shock
Resuscitation (CPR) for Adults, Children and Infants
This module teaches how to administer CPR chest compressions and rescue breaths to both child and infant casualties. The module also explains the benefits of AEDs.
• Administering CPR to children • Administering CPR to infants • Stopping CPR
• Defibrillators (AEDs) - sample demonstration ( as this does not exist for the public in this area)
• Extra things to consider
Secondary Illnesses and Conditions
This module details some of the illnesses and conditions that children may live with on a daily basis, such as epilepsy and allergies, and explains how to recognise the symptoms and respond in an emergency situation.
• Allergic reactions and anaphylaxis • Bites and stings
• Epilepsy
• High temperatures
• Shock (due to loss of blood)
Further Secondary Illnesses and Conditions
This section looks at some more common conditions, as well as a few rare illnesses, and helps learners understand how to recognise and respond to them.
• Hypothermia
• Drowning
We provided this training at no cost to our local partners like other NGO's that look after special children. Private primary and secondary schools and private businesses paid a fee which covered a bit of our expense and our hope is that in the next trainings, the cost will cover all our expenses and the remaining profit to go towards building of the first phase of our delivery - ‘Children's Wellness Center’. Also, we are hoping for sponsorships to train community and local schools and people who can not afford to attend this training, like fishermen and farmers.
Next year 2020 we are aiming to deliver 100 training session to train 10,000 people and hopefully raise over £30k to go towards a full launch of the VSCWC Children's Wellness Center! Thank you for your donations and time! For more information please contact us! Exciting times!
