GWMD: preparing the 2025 edition

By Children of Prisoners Europe | Organisation

Game with Mum & Dad (GWMD) is an initiative designed to strengthen the bond between children and their imprisoned parents through play. By providing a safe and structured environment, GWMD facilitates child-friendly visits where children can engage in meaningful activities with their parents. These experiences not only strengthen family connections, but also promote emotional resilience and well-being, helping children navigate the challenges of parental imprisonment.

Bringing GWMD’s vision to India

The model of GWMD has inspired similar initiatives worldwide. For instance, in India, organisations have begun exploring programs that align with the core principles of GWMD, further amplifying its positive impact.

For the first time, two structured, play-based Gala Bhet events were held, with Gala meaning hug and Bhetmeaning meeting. These events have marked a milestone in India, where a globally inspired, child-centered approach is taking root — an important step towards truly listening to children in prison environments and addressing their unique needs. This initiative was led by Prayas in collaboration with the Maharashtra Prison Department and partners of COPE, the Aangan Trust. These events took place in two prisons:

  • Kalyan Adharwadi District Jail (March 7, 2025) – housing 150 undertrial women, 75% of whom are mothers.
  • Mumbai Byculla Women’s District Jail (March 8, 2025) – housing 400 undertrial women, 75% of whom are mothers.

Priorities for 2025

In the first months of 2025, COPE has been actively preparing for a new edition of the campaign, particularly focusing on:

  • Expanding the program’s reach and impact: more countries are set to join GWMD, extending the opportunity for children worldwide to connect with their imprisoned parents in a safe and structured manner.
  • Strengthening partnerships: COPE has been working closely with prison authorities, NGOs and local organisations to ensure effective program implementation and long-term sustainability.
  • Securing funding: ensuring the financial and logistical support necessary for GWMD’s continued success remains a top priority.
  • Refining the approach: COPE has been incorporating feedback from participants of the 2023 and 2024 editions to ensure the structure of the upcoming GWMD edition reflects the evolving needs of children and families.

The broader impact of GWMD

Beyond the direct interactions it fosters, GWMD is influencing conversations about the rights and well-being of children with imprisoned parents. The success of the initiative is helping to foster greater recognition of the importance of child-friendly prison policies and programs that uphold family ties. Organisations worldwide are now looking to GWMD as a model for creating meaningful and sustainable change within the prison system. With the continued support of partners and donors, GWMD remains committed to nurturing the all-important emotional connection between parents and their children, a bond that often struggles to flourish in prison settings.
