First, the good news: Champ, who we made the poster child for this fundraiser, is now heartworm negative and in his new home. Unfortunately, there are many other “Champs” that still need our help and yours. In fact, Dixie Adoptables has taken in 169 animals since Champ arrived last November.
The things we are doing to improve the shelter are all intended to make the shelter a happier, less stressful place for the animals in our care. This is very important because, through no fault of their own, some wonderful animals just don’t get adopted quickly. For example, one great dog named Mateo just passed his one year anniversary at the shelter. He is a wonderful loving fellow and we want him to have his own family, but we also want him to be happy and well-adjusted while he is here. A cat, Ziggy, has been here for almost 4 years. Because some of the animals end up with us for extended periods of time, we need your help to make the shelter as much of a happy home for them as we can.
Since our last update, we have been working to make kennel improvements. We purchased new water pails for all the kennels since many were old and were starting to leak. We also purchased a new washing machine after our old one finally quit working.
To help provide a better environment for the dogs, one of our board members purchased audio players for the kennel areas and puppy quarantine room that play calming music for the dogs to listen to and it really helps! They are quieter and much less stressed as a result.
We have also been working to update our photo room. This is important because pictures really help increase the number of adoption applications.
We are making repairs to the existing kennels as needed until we can afford to replace them. To help with sanitation we have purchased a used commercial floor and wall cleaning machine that will make cleaning and sanitizing the kennels more efficient and will ensure that the floors are drier than a squeegee can get them. This is a big concern since clean, dry floors promote better animal health.
The shelter still has many issues to address, but we are working hard to overcome as many of them as possible and provide the best possible care for the animals.
Thank you for supporting Dixie Adoptables and helping us to make the lives of these animals better while they are in our care. We really couldn’t do it all without your support.
