Day of the Dead at Cabo Pulmo National Park!

By Norma Sanchez | Project Leader

Day of the Dead Celebration at Cabo Pulmo National Park!

This fall, the Visitor's Center celebrated one of the most traditional days in Mexico, "Day of the Dead." On this Mexican tradition on November 1st and 2nd, we remember all our loved ones who are no longer with us.

Visitor's Center became festive the whole week, with several colorful activities and moments of intimate meditation.

In preparation for our "Altar of the Dead," we held a workshop led by Judith C., a member of one of the yesteryear families of Cabo Pulmo. We learned about the elements of the altar, such as candles, incense, salt-shredded paper, and personal things or belongings that our loved ones enjoyed in life. With Judy's help, the participants made paper cempasúchil flowers to decorate our traditional altar.

The festival occurred on the night of November 1st, when the "Altar Contest" began, and the judges reviewed each element to issue their verdict. The first stop was the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas booth, which made an altar in honor of endangered species. The tour continued through the town's streets, visiting several houses that placed their altars.

Finally, we arrived at our altar at the Visitor's Center, which decorated the stage for the Catrinas parade. Children read the traditional verses "Calaveritas". While listening to the participants, tamales and chocolate were shared by all.

The evening ended very joyfully, with the participation of the community's people and the participants' joy and amazement of our Heritage, a celebration designed as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

We continue working with great enthusiasm, promoting our culture and the care of our planet. We invite you to continue to support our Center every day. Children, young people, community members and visitors, and visitors inspire us with their energy, willingness to participate, and passion for building a better world together.

Thank you for your continued support!
