Project Report | Jan 7, 2022
New year, new opportunities

Students pitching their business idea
Students pitching their business idea

Throughout 2021, despite the challenges that covid presented with lockdowns and pressure on schools to deliver the core curriculum, we still managed to work with, inspire and support 6,446 children and young people. We continued to develop ways of working with them online, to supplement face to face encounters. Our Insights online careers fairs attracted students and parents from 46 different schools, with an average score of 4.3 out of 5 and 89% telling us they were more aware of different career opportunities as a result. We are also seeing an increasing number of students for 1 to 1 sessions with our qualified careers advisors, helping them make sense of their options and providing that vital support during a time when many young people have felt vulnerable and confused. Please see the article below from one of careers advisors giving some insight into what's going on for young people right now.

We were delighted to run our popular Enterprise Day Challenge where students work in teams to develop ideas for products or services and then pitch their ideas to a panel of local entrepreneurs. The students excelled themselves, and got a taste for entrepreneurship.

As we move into 2022, we are excited that our STEM outreach events are restarting. Next week we'll take students from eight primary schools into the Department of Engineering at University of Cambridge, for hands-on engineering challenges. Continuing the theme of starting early, we're planning a careers fair for 9 and 10 year olds in March from another eight schools. We're targeting schools with the highest number of students qualifying for free school meals, because there's such a strong corolation between low income and career prospects. It's vital we start early to help students see what careers they can aspire to.

We have lots of plans for developing our services and hope that with the help of our supporters we can continue to make a difference for children and young people in our region.
