Our project is a social media platform that provides career information to adolescents in Uganda. Career information is critical catalyst for self discovery and gives adolescents focus and motivation to study. Our weekly posts reach over 10,000 adolescents. Lack of access to career guidance information has resulted in many of our Country's youth going through school without clarity on what career to pursue. Majority end up making choices for whatever comes their way. With such a background many end up being "misfits" - starting with the post secondary studies into the world of work. Part of the challenge of unemployment among out youth is lack of self awareness of their abilities due to lack of career guidance.
Information is power. Once adolescents have access to information, they will be informed of the various career paths that they can pursue. They will be informed about what each career needs in terms of qualifications, the institutes that offer these programs and prospects for careers in the market. Information will give them purpose for being in school, setting goals and entering the market more prepared than is the current situation of despair.
We foresee our work leading to schools establishing a vibrant career guidance program that is part and parcel of the school calendar. This will make career guidance not a one off event but an all year round program in schools. Research has proven that students who receive regular career guidance make better choices in their elective subjects, which in turn lead to improvement in their grades leading to fitting careers. We will witness a more productive youth than is the case today.
