Thank you—we can’t say it enough. In the first months of this year, a series of severe storms disrupted the lives of millions of Californians. The storms claimed numerous lives, displaced thousands of families from their homes, and left communities across the state without power.
Your generous support of the California Storm Relief Fund powered a flexible, trust-based grant to the Latino Community Foundation. Since 2016, the organization has driven more than $25 million in support of nearly 400 grassroots, predominantly Latino-led organizations across the state of California. In and after times of disaster, the organization is well positioned to get flexible resources into the hands of trusted organizations and community leaders on the front lines of response. It is focused on a model of Just Recovery: taking into account the voices of those most affected by the disaster. In response to the storms, the organization provided flexible funding to local organizations serving farmworker and undocumented communities impacted by the storms in the most affected counties.
This fund is no longer accepting donations, and this will be the last fund report of this kind from our team about this fund. When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
