Belize fire season is observed from February 15 to June 15 of every year. Most forest fires originate from negligent use particularly when preparing land for cultivation for agriculture inclusive of milpa farming. Agricultural fire is a fire occurring solely on an agricultural plot, lit by a farmer to clear newly chopped land, to pre-burn before harvesting a crop, or to burn fodder leftover after harvest. On the other hand, wildfire (also called bushfire) is a fire occurring on land covered in wild vegetation or forest, lit either by humans, or by an escaped agricultural fire, or by natural occurrence such as lightning. While anthropogenic fires are major cause for forest degradation, natural fires play an important role in forest regrowth, restoration, and maintaining healthy ecosystems.
Fire management has become a critical component of Ya’axché’s work, particularly within our Community Outreach and Livelihoods (COL) program. Ya'axche is working to reduce the impacts of fire within the Maya Golden Landscape (MGL) through education, promotion of climate-smart farm practices, fire monitoring, and firefighting. Through the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices, farmers are ensuring forest cover, improved soils, and productive lands. For farmers who traditionally use fire, extension services are provided to integrate controlled burns, use of fire equipment and fire safety protocols into farming system to ensure effective fire management.
According to Global Forest Watch, a total of 228 VIIRS fire alerts were reported in Belize between March to June, 2022, with minimal alerts in southern Belize. In 2022, due to early rains, there were no major forest fires, for the exception of November 2022 where a forest fire was observed in the Deep River Forest Reserve, Toledo District. Ya’axche Conservation Trust is a member of the Southern Belize Fire Working Group who works to manage fire at the landscape level and contribute to healthy forests and connectivity.
