WHO WE ARE

CSC is a healthcare organization that provides affordable surgical care by skilled specialists. CSC started as a small project to help victims of landmine injuries, many of whom were children. Since then, it has grown into what it is today - a tertiary teaching hospital with over 75 Cambodian staff, and 93,065 and counting surgeries since 1998.  We offer free or low-cost surgical care and rehabilitation in numerous specialties for economically disadvantaged patients. We also focus on building capacity by providing sub-specialty surgical training and international training to medical professionals. Integral to our mission is a program of training local surgeons and hospital staff by international experts – focusing on the development of sustainable rehabilitative surgical services.  We empower our CSC staff to develop skills and knowledge that contribute to long-term improvements in healthcare across the country, ensuring that the impact extends beyond our center and supports a sustainable healthcare system.

THE ASK

Whatever you can give, please know we are grateful to receive it! Little acts of kindness can collectively make a big difference.  Thank you for your continued support and for helping us live our mission.

Cambodian Toddler Experiences the Kindness of Strangers

Three-year-old Monkol lives with his parents and his 14-year-old sister in Kandal province, Cambodia. His father works as a driver, and his mother works in a local garment factory to make ends meet for their growing family. At home, he likes eating fried eggs with rice and playing with toy cars. When Monkol was a year old, he had a high fever, after which his eyes began crossing. Concerned that his condition was getting worse, a villager told them about CSC. This inspired them to bring Monkol to see a visiting eye specialist. After a consultation, Monkol’s parents were told that he has esotropia in both eyes, a condition where both of his eyes turn inward and is a form of strabismus (eye misalignment). If left untreated, Monkol may have difficulty reading and suffer from poor vision as he grows older.

Fortunately, CSC was able to help. On 24 February, specialty eye surgeons performed a strabismus surgery for esotropia; this is eye muscle repair surgery to correct his eye muscle problems. Monkol rested quietly for a few days at home, and his mother applied eye drops to decrease the risk of infection. The family is happy his eyes should be completely healed within several weeks. Once his eyesight improves, he will be able to see more clearly and both eyes will work in harmony.

Monkol’s father is deeply grateful and shared: “Now we don’t worry about Monkol’s future. We are very lucky to learn about CSC, and the free care they give to children with eye problems.”
