WHO WE ARE
CSC aims to improve the quality of life for disabled poor people by providing free rehabilitation surgery. Integral to CSC’s mission is a program of training local surgeons and hospital staff by international experts – focusing on the development of sustainable surgical services.
Meet Doeun
Doeun is a 13-year-old student who loves his math class the most. He’s in the sixth grade and lives with his parents, who are vegetable farmers, and his nine-year-old brother. In the future he wants to be a police officer.
Doeun was in a motor vehicle accident in May that caused an open wound on his right heel. After the accident, his family took Doeun to a clinic where they closed and dressed the wound. Two days later, the wound became infected. He needed a debridement procedure, but his family could not afford one. The bone was exposed, and he was in pain. When Doeun’s family learned about Children’s Surgical Centre, they traveled for two hours seeking treatment. Surgeons performed a skin graft procedure to help him walk easily again.
Before surgery, Doeun was unable to walk, attend school, or play games with his friends. His surgery will give him the opportunity to return to his life as a student and engage in activities with his friends and family. He looks forward to riding his bike to school again and not having any pain or infection.
CHALLENGES
The COVID-19 pandemic hit Cambodia in early 2021; CSC activity has been reduced dramatically because patients are afraid or cannot travel to Phnom Penh, which has been under lockdown twice this year as we try to contain the pandemic. Donations have fallen about 30% with many large donors ceasing support. As we continue our mission of training local surgeons and improving the quality of life for disabled Cambodians, every donation helps to pay for staff and supplies.
THE ASK
Whatever you can give, please know we are grateful to receive it! Please consider signing up to give us a monthly gift, it makes a huge difference to our community. Even just a donation of $10 goes a long way! Thank you for your continued support and helping us through what has become a challenging year.
