By Danny Lovey | Now we can start building
Dear Friends
I feel like all I have reported over the last year is about how close we have become to starting building at Zvamaida Primary School.
The good news is we are now preparing to fix a start date and have signed a contract with a builder to start as soon as possible!
We have incurred arguably a huge sequence of events over the last year; foreign exchange rate disasters with the Zimbabwean currency being floated against the US dollar, with the official rate now around 85 to the US dollar from around 6 to the US dollar, roaring inflation said to be as high as 800 percent; economic ruin for many; food prices, where the average workers can only buy the equivalent of a loaf of bread a day, and most people starving, literally living from day to day trying to sell something to buy food. Children- like a little girl sitting at the side of the road selling carrots so she can go to school. Add to all this, the lock-downs because of Covid-19, then you have what I describe as the "perfect storm". In addition to this of course has been a bundle of technicalities because of the embargo and sanctions Zimbabwe is currently in. This has also caused banks using extreme caution making payments into the country.
We have always been determined that we will complete the project no matter what is thrown against us, but little did we know just how much would be thrown!
Our project now is even more important than it was when we planned it. The deprivation, is far worse; the needs for education even more important, and the need to give people hope instead of despair and desperation.
I look forward to being able to give you my next update, with I hope pictures of how the project is developing.
Once again, I would like to thank all our supporters for their financial help with this project. Without your support it would have all been so much more difficult to have achieved the funding that we have.
Yours most sincerely
Danny
PS – As I write this I am learning of more lockdowns in Zimbabwe because of Covid. Whatever they are, we will overcome!
