Our Haitian staff lead all project builds and identify communities who need clean water access and would be good candidates for our systems. Chelo recently brought a community to us that is in need of clean water. Chantal school has 230 students who attend and approximately 300 more people living in the village surrounding the school. The well is an excellent choice for a system and the community are eager to learn and care for a Water House. In total 530 people will gain access to clean water.
Access to water in Haiti is not usually a problem. The water level is high, meaning many communities have existing wells that provide plentiful water and community building. However, due to extensive bacterial contamination, most wells do not provide clean water safe for drinking. At Chantal--they are no exception. They have many students who leave school sick and community members who have extensive medical bills due to drinking dirty water. There are 530 people who have no clean water access.
Our system integrates into the existing community structures and allows for the entire community's water source to be filtered and cleaned. This method does not disrupt community function or create access in a way that is limited for anyone. It does clean out all contaminants through a 3 stage mechanical filtration process and provide a tank containing clean water for community access at any time. We have had great success with these systems and will give 530 people clean water access.
The long term impact of having clean water (especially at a school) is extensive. Clean water access prevents illness leading to reduced medical bills, more time at school, increased education outcomes, and an overall benefit to wellness. We believe overall health contributes to countless improved outcomes in education, work, and life. The students at Chantal will have higher successes due to overall health and community members will reduce health costs leading to economic successes.
