After losing virtually the entire flock, we checked options with our local partner CFI. We had to learn, there is no vaccination against avian flu available. In Europe, infected flocks are immediately disposed of, including birds in a sanitary cordon of 1-2 km. This is not a real option for our families. They would not understand why we kill their source of income.
This was a difficult decision: On one side, we didn’t want to let the families down. On the other hand, should we really try the same thing again, and risk a total loss again after many months of work? We decided on a compromise with CFI: The remaining project funds would be invested into restocking some of the families. The infrastructure such as pens was still available, so only laying hens and roosters had to be bought. And CFI invested into further training: How to protect your flock from wild birds? 10 families were able to restart breeding. Hopefully these measures, and a dryer “rainy season” will bring them through the next month and allow them to finally earn some additional income. We decided not to invest further funds into chicken raising for the time being, but try to learn from smaller project.
