So Many Animals Need Your Help

By Jessica Roberts | President

With the ongoing spike in surrenders and strays, Dixie Adoptables is now far over capacity. In fact, we are currently at double capacity and in desperate need of more room. We know that it isn’t just us; it is widely reported in the news that this year is the worst in history for the number of intakes at shelters across the country. Dixie Adoptables is definitely feeling the crunch as we have never had this many in our care at one time. Our staff is struggling to keep up with all of the work required of us with so many animals to care for. Add to this already stressful situation the record-breaking heatwave that we have been experiencing and it makes things very difficult for the staff and the animals.

The good news is that we have found a secure area that is immediately available that will allow us to expand and house the overflow, but it isn’t currently insulated and isn’t heated or cooled. If we can get this space usable, it will add an extra 1,300 square feet of usable space for the animals in our care. We have just gotten estimates for insulating the area so that we can make use of it as soon as possible and are exploring ways we can cool it and keep the animals out of the heat. Unfortunately the cost will be high and our budget is already stretched very thin with the increased number of animals we have.

The animals in this community need a safe place to live until they are adopted and get the chance to be part of a loving family. It is an enormous task in a community where the majority of the people are poor, don’t understand the importance of spay/neuter or prevention, and animals are not perceived as a family member but as disposable property. For those of us fighting this battle every day, it can be daunting and both physically and emotionally exhausting. Your support is what gives us hope to keep trying. We are asking for your donations to help us get these new spaces finished out so we can provide the care and comfort that these animals deserve.

Dixie Adoptables hopes to be able to update you soon with pictures and stories of our expanded capabilities thanks to each of you.
