In our continued effort to make the best of our current situation, in a facility that lacks so many things we need, we have set up puppy exercise pens at a board member’s air conditioned/heated building so that we can accommodate the many puppies we are asked to take in. The puppies are well taken care of and we are careful to follow all quarantine protocols. We have been able to care for over 40 puppies and a few adults in heartworm treatment because of the added space and that is just since January.
The shelter is far too small to support the needs of our community, and doesn’t currently have room to quarantine puppies. In the past, we have relied on board members to help, but it limited how many we could help at a time. The kennel runs at the shelter aren’t a good option, and are barely intended for adult dogs, but certainly not vulnerable puppies. The usage of the board member’s building makes it possible for us to help so many more.
The front and rear doors of the main building were in such bad shape; we were having trouble opening and closing them. The city came out and replaced them both with new doors. It is sad when the novelty of a door that opens and closes easily makes you do a happy dance, but it does.
Some other improvements include: a new washing machine, audio players for the kennel areas to soothe the dogs, and updates to our photo building so we can take more adorable pictures of the animals. We have purchased new water pails to replace the ones that were starting to rust and leak, a new mop and mop bucket for the cat building, and a new machine to make cleaning the runs better.
Our transport bus is giving us a little trouble and as soon as it returns from transport in a few days, it will go in the shop for some minor repairs.
We won’t give up hope that eventually we will have the money to build a facility that makes caring for the animals even better, and gives them the environment they deserve until forever families adopt them.
Do these improvements make a difference? Yes, we have taken in 142 animals in the last 3 months. This time last year, we only took in 49. Those are very different numbers.
Thank you for your continued support and helping to make a difference in the lives of these precious animals. We are working diligently to do everything we can!
