Keep On Believing

Dixie Adoptables met with the city aldermen and the mayor in October. We were there to get a new contract signed, and discuss a new building that had been promised a year ago by the previous mayor. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as we had expected. They made us choose between the raise that was in the contract or a new building. It wasn’t an easy decision, but knowing that we hadn’t  gotten a raise in 5 years, costs had gone up on everything, and money is always tight, we chose the increase.

Having to choose when we needed both was painful. Some of the board members looked into purchasing an existing building in our community, but in the end there just weren’t many options, and the buildings we did find needed more repairs than we could afford.

Our hope is to make needed repairs once again to the building we are in, and keep working toward the goal of a new shelter. We did add dri-dek flooring to many of our kennel floors. This keeps the puppies and dog’s feet up off the concrete floor. It helps the animals to stay drier and lessens the chance of ringworm and other problematic issues from arising.

We have a lot of special needs dogs in our care lately (scared of people and other animals), and to make things better for them, we have set up extra large pens at some of our board members and employees homes. This allows the dogs to be in a home environment, and hopefully learn to trust and be part of a family. They are coming a long way. Watching them come out of their shells and enjoy life is a very rewarding feeling.
