Ormanie village currently has 30 pre-primary school students, but no primary school for them or the older children. The closest primary school is in Terat, a 6km walk away. Often children have to walk this long distance by themselves, or they try to stay with relatives in Terat. Elephants and even lions in the area make the walk not just long but dangerous too. The village therefore really wants to build a primary school for their children, and have already begun the building of the foundations.
Many children in Ormanie subvillage are unable to attend school beyond pre-primary level. The nearest primary school is more than 6km walk away. Parents are afraid of letting their children walk for fear of being attacked by wild animals, as there are elephants and sometimes even lions in the area. Ormanie wants to solve this problem by building their own primary school right in the middle of the community.
This project will help the community construct a primary school, after which the government will provide teachers and the school can start up. Parents will be more willing to send their children to school without the worries about safety, and the children will be spared 3 hours of walking every day, which can be spent doing homework, playing or helping their parents instead. Children from neighbouring communities will also be able to use this school meaning it could reach more than 100 children.
This school will provide education to more than 100 children in Ormanie subvillage and neighbouring villages on an ongoing basis. Parents will have little reason not to send their children to school any more, so the educational level of the whole community will increase. This will lead to increased incomes and opportunities in the community, as well as less obvious impacts such as children being more able to help parents by, for example, reading labels and instructions on veterinary medicines.
