Iris and her family embody the real meaning of “resilient”. In 2017 she and her husband, with their 2 children (age 5 & 6), lost their home in Hurricane Maria and were forced to rebuild their roof with debris recollected in the storm’s aftermath. For the past 7 years this young family has been living under leaks and the multiple challenges derived from it: animals and rodents entering through its cracks, mold, and damaged goods, just to name a few.
Thanks to our collaborative network this case came to our attention and right away we decided to take action and provide a solution taking matter into our hands! PRoTechos worked on this home for 6 weeks starting in January 2025. The original material estimate accounted for the rafters and galvalume panels to measure 16’ feet long. When the team was rebuilding the home they found that one side of the roof was slightly longer and required longer beams and galvalume. Thanks to GlobalGiving donationsPRoTechos was able to afford the difference of the exchange of materials and, without further delays, we were able to provide a new complete roof for this family. Now, Iris and her family continue thriving and overcoming new challenges with a stronger foundation, knowing that there’s a secured roof that will protect them from future disasters.
At PRoTechos, our approach to reconstruction involves working closely with the communities we serve, while providing residents with basic carpentry training. We collaborate with local community leaders, other non-profits, and municipalities to identify the most urgent cases, focusing on helping residents who do not have the financial resources to hire help for roof repairs. We prioritize homes with children, the elderly, or infirm occupants.
The support of our donor community has been essential to making this work possible. Thanks to contributions from generous supporters like you, we’re able not only to provide safe housing but also to train Puerto Rico’s future builders.
